Global Integration and Differentiation
(ECI 524: Theory and Research in Global Learning)
It is an incredible challenge to teach global learning in the special education field. Students who live with cognitive or physical disabilities are often still learning about their immediate environment and community, let alone the entire world. Entering the Theory and Research in Global Learning course was a wake up call! The readings and discussions we had in our virtual classroom often turned to thoughts of civic responsibilities and understanding ourselves to be a part of a greater world. This made me think about how my students with hearing loss perceive the world around them and how their sensory limitation would affect their true potential.
In this course, I took to heart these concerns and insights and collaborated with a classmate to develop a unit plan with students with hearing loss in mind. As you browse through this collaborative lesson plan you will quickly and clearly see how the lessons are tailored so that deaf students have complete access and understanding on par with their language and cognitive abilities.

Technology Influences in Global Learning
(ECI 546: New Literacies in Media Forethoughts)
While I plan to take New Literacies in Media in the Fall of 2014, I have already made some discoveries into how this class bridges cultural barriers. The population of students I teach have an extremely rich culture--Deaf culture. Technology has been important in the Deaf community for years because it allows people who are deaf or hard of hearing an outlet for communicating with one another and persons with typical hearing. Persons with hearing loss have an assortment of technology devices at their disposal to improve their hearing capabilities. The word "technology" has always carried meaning for me in the terms of: hearing aids, cochlear implants, and video relay services. Now, after learning about some new virtual resources, I can see how my students who are deaf or hard of hearing can add more web tools to their 21st century skill set. A display of technology for the deaf and of 21st century web tools is provided below.

A cochlear implant is an electronic device that partially restores hearing in people who have severe hearing loss due to damage of the inner ear and who don't benefit from hearing aids.

Compelling Question: What are ways to support deaf and hard of hearing students in developing their literacy and language?
Answer: Deaf and hard of hearing students need access to and practice with 21st century technology in conjunction with their hearing amplifications and communication devices. Many of the newest 21st century Web tools can be a used along with their hearing technology. NLGL courses changed my attitude and thinking toward technology and its purposes.
